Ultima I (MS-DOS)

Ultima 1, the Origin version, is both a historically important game, and a genre-defining RPG. I have never played any western RPG on Nintendo's venerable 8-bit console, but I can't help but be intrigued by this Ultima: Quest for the Avatar (NES) eBay auction. As for the game itself, it is supposed to be a slightly different, slightly cut-down of the classic Quest of the Avatar CRPG which is definitely a good thing.

Boxed Earthbound (SNES): The Bundle

Earthbound is a famously rare and excellent 16-bit RPG for the Nintendo Super NES, and a game you can pay a lot for and grab via this Earthbound (SNES) eBay auction. Planescape: Torment (PC)

Quite possibly the best fantasy RPG ever made and, definitely, the only Dungeons & Dragons game to ever feature both a Brothel of Slaking Intellectual Lusts and hundreds of thousands of excellent words, Planescape: Torment is an absolutely amazing offering. A classic. Black Isle's magnum opus and something you cannot afford to miss.

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn & Throne of Baal (PC)

Time for some classic CRPG fun with this lovely Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn & Throne of Baal (PC) eBay auction, which will allow you to get your hands on the excellent sequel to Baldur's Gate that vastly improved upon the original and its Throne of Baal expansion -- the very last chapter to BioWare's Baldur's Gate series.

The Bard's Tale II (Amiga)

The Bard's Tale II remains, to this very day, one of my favourite CRPGs, though I can see why some people might find its slightly repetitive dungeon crawling, well, repetitive. Anyway, you can now joyfully grab a fantastic copy of Bard's Tale II for the Commodore Amiga over at eBay and find out who's right. The auction is a US only affair, and you'll be getting a gloriously sealed copy for what will hopefully end up being a very good price indeed.

Dungeons and Desktops

Haven't read it just yet, but I'm pretty sure that Dungeons and Desktops: The History of Computer Role-Playing Games is an amazing book. It is after all written by Matt Barton, whose depth of knowledge you can check both via his amazing YouTube channel and from his CRPG history Gamasutra articles. As for the book itself, well, get it from Amazon. They are having sort of a sale right now.

James Bond 007 RPG

A set of almost all that was published by the now defunct Victory Games INC. James Bond 007 Role Playing Game was released in 1983 and supported for many years, but went out of print by the 90's. It was based primarily on the film series, and only secondarily on the books by Ian Fleming. The system was notable for its universal skill-based mechanics which emphasized quality of result more than binary success/failure. It also includes a Hero point system where points can be spent to modify the outcome of rolls. Character creation is open point-based, allowing characters at "Rookie", "Agent", and "00" levels.
