A dark and atmospheric adventure game about humanity's capability for evil and redemption, I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream by Cyberdreams was based on Harlan Ellison's story of the same name, and has evolved into a cult classic. Audio-visually impressive and innovative as it may have been, Lucasarts' biker-themed adventure game Full Throttle relied a bit too heavily on mini games, and was definitely on the shorter side. Discworld Noir (PC CD)

I do adore Terry Pratchett's Discworld, and even though it did not always translate to top quality games, this wondrous setting did help spawn one of my favourite adventure games of all time: Discworld Noir. Discworld Noir was an innovative, brilliantly written and designed, often hilarious, very clever, lovely to look at, masterfully scored and wonderfully voiced first person, puzzle-solving affair that you will have to run on a Windows 95, 98 or XP machine to properly enjoy.

Infocom's Zork II

The next step downward to danger, and the second installment to the classic Zork trilogy, the still excellent (despite a certain puzzle involving baseball) Zork II has once again appeared on eBay. Forward looking multiplayer space combat sim X-Wing vs. TIE-Fighter by Lucasarts remains one of the finest Star Wars games ever made for the PC, and a still immersive sci-fi flying experience. Interestingly you can grab X-Wing vs. TIE-Fighter complete in its box over at eBay for an incredibly sensible $18.99. The game comes in its big box with the game CD, manual, Quick Start guide, Making Magic CD, and all sorts of leaflets.

The Ancient Art of War in the Skies (MS-DOS)

The World War I installment in the ground-breaking Ancient Art of War RTS series, the brilliant Ancient Art of War in the Skies (DOS), has happily made itself available on eBay. The game on offer comes complete in its lovely box with manuals, disks, and registration card, and will happily run on and 286 (or better) MS-DOS PCs.

Quake (PC)

The follow-up to DOOM, the final id game John Romero worked on, and a definitive classic that shaped the FPS for years to come, Quake is an amazing and truly ground-breaking game. A classic and mighty fine classic RTS, yet also a gloriously silly game with tons of excellently cheesy FMVs, Westwood's Red Alert has somehow managed to age gracefully. Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars (PC)

The original Broken Sword remains a stunning, engrossing, smart, and incredibly enjoyable game to this very day, and, despite that goat puzzle, I would consider as one of the best point-and-click adventures ever made. Realms of the Haunting - Limited Edition (PC)

Realms of the Haunting, despite being a rather over-ambitious attempt at a horror game and failing to become the success it deserved to be, remains a unique, innovative, atmospheric, and actually very good horror game for the PC. The IBM PC Jr, IBM's failed attempt at an affordable home computer with decent gaming capabilities, and a machine that essentially gave us King's Quest, also happens to be a rare and highly collectible micro. It's my favourite space strategy game of all time, and a vintage 4X offering by Microprose that simply hasn't aged a day.
