The Quest for the Rings (Odyssey 2)

The Quest for the Rings Odyssey 2 boxThe Quest for the Rings Videopac G7000The Quest for the Rings mapWhat you see above, the complete Quest for the Rings for the Magnavox Odyssey 2 (a.k.a. the Philips Videopac G7000 in Europe), is one of the most impressively boxed video games ever released and a rare and luxuriant board game/video game hybrid. The Quest for the Rings was released in 1981 as part of the sadly short-lived Master Strategy series and you can enjoy a truly wonderful and quite related video here. Oh, and to try to grab a rather rare(-ish) and in apparently very good condition copy do follow the obvious The Quest for the Rings eBay link. Seller only ships within the US I'm afraid.

  1. Man, that is pretty nice.. I thought at first look it was just a board game, but all that and it's a video game.
That still beats todays limited edition versions, plus paying $10-$25 more for a paper map, tin case and small print travel guide or something...

  2. Absolutely does. I'm actually seriously thinking of grabbing a Videopac in order to play this game only. They are not that pricey mind.

  3. You ever heard of this..? http://www.redshift.hu/indexF.asp?body=/Symbian.asp

I found it looking for screens of The Quest for the Rings. Not much luck finding any for this one either.

  4. Nope, never heard of it my friend, though the style of these games sounds more than familiar. And they run on a phone... Hmmm... How very intriguing...

Here's an appropriate -better than screenshots- video: http://www.wegame.com/watch/Quest_for_the_Rings_Odyssey_2/?ref=rv

  5. Oh my! I would get soooo frustrated with that game... I bet it would get pretty tough too. That T-Rex looked pretty vicious and was quick to throw down some fire balls..... wait a second, that was no T-Rex then....

  6. Nope. It was a ghastly cephalopod trying to look vaguely saurish... Uhm, right...

  7. I played the hell out of it as a kid but the sad thing is, it is a one trick pony. You face the same bad guys in every dungeon and the Wizard and Warrior are the only two classes you can really play to any real effect.

The box, map tokens and token hiders are very well done. It was visionary thirty years ago, but its tech is so dated it wouldn't hold your attention for longer than a single game.

  8. Ah, that's a shame, but still, one has to admire a novel and innovative idea. Happy 2012!
