Osborne 1 (OCC 1)

The Osborne 1 might be a huge lumbering beast by today's standards, but, when it was released back in 1981, it was the first truly successful portable computer. It did after all sport a whole (tiny) monitor, a proper keyboard, disk drives and more than a few lovely switches, while weighing less than 12kg / 25 pounds. Impressive, eh? And did you know the thing was running on CP/M while providing with a pretty impressive suit of built-in software? Of course you did dears.

Happily you can bid on this Osborne 1 on eBay and hope for the best. Seller ships only within the US (it's not a stinkin' notebook you know) and will apparently be including quite a lot of software as well as games with it. Mind you, the computer comes with two disc drives and works properly.

  1. I'd like to see someone try and take one these beasts with them on the train, and sit it on their lap.

  2. Aye, that would be most impressive indeed. Especially if the whole scene somehow included John Cleese.
