The Enterprise (a.k.a. Elan, Flan or even Samurai) was an ambitious yet hopeless games focused 8-bit computer that was released in 1985 by UK manufacturer Intelligent Systems. It came with a built-in joystick, cartridge slot, a 4MHz Z80, 4 channels of sound, impressive graphics (657x512 high-res and 256 available colours), a few dedicated chips, a ton of expansion ports and either 64k or 128k of RAM. Despite the impressive specs, some interesting games and a cartridge that guaranteed full ZX Spectrum compatibility, the advance of the 16-bit home micros and a ridiculous price point made sure the Enterprise was dead within a year.
Most promised peripherals (from a 4MB RAM expansion to a proper 3.5" FDD) and games remained thus unreleased, while the computers themselves -the Enterprise 64 and Enterprise 128- were gradually transformed into highly sought after collector's items. You can find more about them here, here or here and try the EP128Emu emulator here.
As for readers of this blog that have a couple hundred pounds to, uhm, invest in obscure vintage hardware, well, fear no more. You can happily spend yourselves silly and buy a rather fantastic boxed Enterprise 64 via eBay. Seller ships worldwide and you will be getting a boxed, mint machine, complete with manuals, BASIC cartridge, leads, demo tape etc.

Maniac Mansion is the best adventure game to ever hit a console, and that despite Nintendo's ridiculous censorship efforts. It remains, you see, a proper SCUMM game designed by Ron Gilbert and can be bought in its complete boxed glory via this Maniac Mansion NES eBay auction. Seller only ships withing the US. Manual, cartridge, poster, sleeve, etc are also included.

It might be almost three times the size of Nintendo's original Famicom, but Sharp's twinFamicom (or is it Twin Famicom?) is a console definitely worth owning. It is, you see, relatively rare, comes complete with a built-in Famicom Disk System, sports full Famicom compatibility and looks rather nice too. Oh, and you can grab a one via this Sharp Twin Famicom eBay listing. Seller ships worldwide.

I can vividly remember drooling over those lovely Discovery Pack adverts back when I was a kid, and it seems I'll stay at drooling, as this excellent Atari 520 ST Discovery Pack auction is a UK only thing. Oh, well. Guess Atari ST emulation will have to do for a bit more and them classic top 50 ST games will keep on teasing me. You islanders, on the other hand, better know you'll be getting a chance at an Atari 520 STe in its complete Discovery Pack box (including manuals, apps, games, leads etc), some demo/mag disks, a dust cover, a variety of other extras and a large selection of boxed games, among which you can find such gems as Kick Off 2, Speedball 2, Utopia, Xenon 2, Flood, Rick Dangerous and Sim City. It might be unassuming and way less luxuriant than the impressive 5200, but the Atari 7800 was an excellent console. It was cheap, sported decent graphics and -importantly- was backwards compatible with the Atari 2600 and could thus play hundreds of classic games, and even a few interesting exclusives. The average 7800 usually sells for less than 40$, 32 euro or 28 pounds.
Grab an Atari 7800 Pro System & extras @ eBay. Seller ships worldwide and the winning bidder will also get a manual, all necessary cables, 2 controllers and a couple 2600 games.

Yes, one of the rarest NES games in existence is available to US residents via an aptly titled Caltron 6 in 1 NES eBay auction. Apparently it's an even rarer than usual new in box, factory sealed and rather excellently preserved boxed version of the game too. Hurrah! Find out more about this unlicensed 8-bit beauty here and here.

The PS One, a console that's shockingly considered retro these days, was a rather more compact version of the original, ridiculously successful and iconic Sony PlayStation. Then again, you all know that. You probably also know, that hundreds of brilliant games have been released for the thing. So, uhm, here's a boxed PAL PS1 console & 8 games & extras. UK only. A price under 20-25£ would be quite a bargain.

Mayhem in Monsterland is definitely one of the technically more accomplished C64 games ever produced, the last truly big commercial release for the machine and one of the best and most beautiful platform games you can get your hands on. Also, it's relatively easy to find a copy of it on eBay. What's more, indie retro developer and publisher Psytronik, have rereleased the game and you can grab it at its shiniest right here. Tape, disk and deluxe versions are available, whereas the game has been slightly updated/patched too. Brilliant!

SNK's Neo Geo AES is a brilliant beast of a console, that, when originally released, was brave and expensive enough to market itself as an executive toy. It also still happens to be the undisputed king of the 2D beat-'em-up and proper home of all Metal Slug games, and you can even try your luck on a US only boxed Neo Geo & Games & Memory card eBay auction. The included games are none other than Art of Fighting 2 and Fatal Fury Special. The average Neo Geo -without extras- usually sells for around 300$.
