An excellent PC games collection

If you are a US resident (though, who knows what an email can achieve?) and are even mildly interested in classic PC gaming you simply have to try and grab this Vintage PC Games Collection. Not only is it still very cheap to buy (the price will go up, mind), but it also includes nine mostly excellent games. Among them you will find brilliant cartoon adventure Toon Struck, Sierra's classic CRPG Return to Krondor, turn-based strategy classic Breach 2, and the ever lovely, Arthurian Conquests of Camelot.  

Les Manley: Lost in L.A. (DOS)

Les Manley was Accolade's not particularly successful attempt at coming up with its very own Leisure Suit Larry, that sadly fell flat on its face. Still, despite mediocre (at best) sales the character managed to star in two light-hearted adventures, the second and better of which you could grab via this Les Manley: Lost in L.A. auction. It's a pretty enjoyable curio and a rather collectible adventure game, which does come complete in its rich box. Seller ships only within the US.

The Sega Saturn Sophia Dev Kit

The first Japanese edition of the Sega Saturn Sophia Development System is a true rarity and -of course- something contemporary indie developers could use to provide us with more Saturn games. The dev kit does come with a price though and you can bid on it via this Sega Saturn Sophia auction. Seller ships worldwide. 

An excellently preserved Atari Jaguar

If you live in the US and wouldn't mind paying above the console's average price, well, this impressive Atari Jaguar auction is definitely for you. It's a complete, boxed Jaguar in fantastic condition, that comes with everything the original box should include and a few extra cables. Even the box itself looks great.

Leander (Amiga)

Leander has for some unfathomable reason faded into obscurity, despite being the very first game developed by Traveller's Tales and sporting some seriously impressive visuals. It was even published by Psygnosis and was a highly enjoyable fighting platformer, but, well, collective memory seems to work in mysterious ways. Anyway. You can apparently grab a complete, boxed copy of Leander (Amiga) via that auction I just linked to. Seller ships only within the US.

Mattel Aquarius Boxed & Complete

He may be humble and giving, but you have to know that it was dear Retro Treasures reader Max who discovered this amazing Mattel Aquarius auction. Yes, that failed and rather rare Z80-based home micro that only managed to survive for a few months in 1983 can indeed be yours. Or to use Mattel's official lingo the Aquarius Computer & Game System can be yours. What's more, the computer comes complete in its huge box (including manuals, keyboard overlays, gamepads, expansion unit etc) and is accompanied by four games. Seller ships worldwide.

Road Riot 4WD (Atari Lynx)

The amazing Blake of the equally amazing ByteCellar has apparently done it again! He discovered a way for you (and me) to play the criminally unreleased Road Riot 4WD on the Atari Lynx. It's pretty simple too really, as all we have to do is visit the link to Road Riot 4WD on eBay and grab one of the available copies for a very reasonable $39.95. Following that, inserting the cart into the Lynx should be all that's required. Uhm, yes... Seller ships worldwide.

Oh, and if you have to know, the seller somehow found the unreleased and most probably complete code of the game after the closure of Atari and then transferred it onto an EPROM board. The game itself looks pretty brilliant and technically impressive and you can find out more about it over at The Atari Times.

Atari Lynx & Games

Having already grabbed all the Atari Lynx consoles anyone could care to own, I thought I'd try and get you into the tasteful and at times expensive Lynx collecting hobby too. Yes, I can be nasty like that, but you'll have to admit that the Lynx is a fantastic console, that to this day sports some of the best handheld arcade ports ever. Anyway. This lovely Atari Lynx eBay auction should be a great place to start. The handheld (a Mark I Lynx) comes in fully working condition and is accompanied both by the official carrying case and four games including California Games and Turbo Sub. Seller ships worldwide.

Border Down Special Edition

Border Down by G.rev was released in 2003 and was thus one of the latest and most difficult to grab Sega Dreamcast games. It is, after all, a pretty desirable and rather fantastic arcade, horizontal shoot-'em-up with amazing graphics. As for the Border Down Special Edition, the one that comes complete with an OST CD and different cover art, you can grab it (its Japanese version) over at Play Asia. It's even rarer this one...

Telegames Personal Arcade

The Telegames Personal Arcade, the version of Bit Corporation's DINA 2-in-1 console that was released in the US, is a pretty rare and definitely unique gaming machine. It can play both ColecoVision and Sega SG-1000 (the Master System's daddy), was released back in 1986, sports two different cartridge ports and also looks quite nice. Happily, you can grab one via this Telegames Personal Arcade auction for a complete, boxed system. Seller ships worldwide.

Ultima II for your Apple II

Richard Garriott's Ultima II: The Revenge of the Enchantress was published by Sierra in 1982 and caused enough dispute between the developer and the publisher to lead to the creation of Origin. Besides it's historical importance and the fact that it was a deeply (though unintentionally) surreal CRPG, the game is nowadays quite a rarity too. Especially when it comes complete in its sealed box as is the case with this copy of Ultima II (Apple II) you can bid on at eBay. Seller ships worldwide.

Silicon Dreams by Level 9

Level 9 was a rather brilliant British text adventures developer that produced many an excellent game. Three of its creations, Snowball, Return to Eden and The Worm in Paradise, can be found in the Silicon Dreams compilation. You can grab the complete, boxed Commodore 64 version of said compilation via this Silicon Dreams (C64) auction. Seller ships worldwide.

The Nintendo Wide Boy

The Nintendo Wide Boy, a piece of development hardware for the GameBoy, is both an interesting collector's curio and an incredibly handy bit of hardware that allows GameBoy games to be played on a TV screen. Though it wont be cheap, you can actually grab one in great condition via this Nintendo Wide Boy auction. The Wide Boy comes complete with a particularly interesting Famicom emulator console (the Famulator apparently) and a boxed copy of Ghostbusters 2 (Japanese version). Seller ships worldwide. Turbo by Sega (Intellivision)

Not the best background for a retro gaming photo-shoot, I know, but what you see above is one of the rarest and most difficult to find games ever released for the Intellivision: Turbo. It's a 1981 racing game that apparently remains in mint condition and comes in its original box. So, uhm, well, here's the Turbo (Sega) auction; expect to pay a lot. Seller ships worldwide.

Panzer Dragoon Saga

Released exclusively for the Sega Saturn in 1998, Sega's Panzer Dragoon Saga is a truly fantastic RPG that has aged to both perfection and relative rarity. Every Saturn gamer should own a copy really, but this amazing shrink-wrapped and spankin' new Panzer Draggon Saga is definitely one for collectors; . Seller ships only within the US.

NES Cartridge Coaster - Duck Hunt

Might seem sacrilegious, but it really isn't. It's a thing of beauty instead. It's the NES Cartridge Coaster (the Duck Hunt variation) and it's a handcrafted coaster for the retro-lover's desk. Seller ships worldwide, but I do believe you'd better hurry and grab it.

Fooblitzky by Infocom

Facing severe problems with selling interactive fiction to the widening gaming masses, Infocom made the fatal mistake of not soldiering on and succumbing to the supposed market pressures of graphics. Hence the failed but interesting and nowadays rare Fooblitzky. It was lavishly boxed board/strategy game for 2-4 players, that used the computer as a cross between a referee and a rather impressive accessory. The game as you most probably know flopped, meaning it usually costs quite a bit to grab in our day and age.

You can still try your luck on this Fooblitzky (Atari XL/XE) auction and hope for a decent price. The game comes in its complete (lavish too) box, including everything from the original disk and manuals to boards and markers. Everything seems to be in fantastic condition. Seller ships to N. & S. Acorn BBC Micro B

The BBC micro B is as iconic a British computer as one could hope for. The fact then that this lovely BBC micro B auction is available to worldwide buyers, should be of considerable interest to all 8-bit collectors; especially those with a thing for educational and/or gaming machines. The computer comes in its box and complete with user guide, welcome tape, welcome instructions and all necessary extras. Oh, and the auction was discovered by Retro Treasures reader Joel.

A lovely Atari 400

The Atari 400, just like the Atari 800, appeared in 1979, but unlike its bigger and more powerful brother, it was actually designed as a child-friendly and child-resistant machine. It is thus one of the sturdiest 8-bit computers ever and you can bid on it via this Atari 400 auction. The computer seems to be in excellent condition and comes with its manual, a BASIC cartridge and the much needed power supply. Seller ships only within the US.

The humble Nintendo NES

Everyone has to start from someplace and I can't see why you (yes, you!) prospective NES retro-gaming collector should be any different. Being me, I can't help but suggest you take it easy and start off simple. With this NES auction perhaps. It will be pretty cheap, the console comes with two controllers and you'll be getting two games, one of which is no other than the original Zelda. Seller ships only within the USA. 

Life & Death II: The Brain (PC)

I think I bought the original Life & Death mainly for its amazing box contents and then grabbed Life & Death II for being a unique and pretty great game. Then again, I was nothing but a kid. The wise readers of this blog will be willing to buy and play Life & Death II: The Brain (generously discounted by magisterrex) for pure educational reasons instead; the intricacies of brain surgery are, after all, only a few gaming hours away. The game comes complete in its original box and is the 5.25" disk MS-DOS version.

The Last Ninja 2 (Amiga)

The Last Ninja 2 was an excellent and quite demanding isometric arcade adventure. It was released in 1990 for the Commodore Amiga and you can now easily grab it via this The Last Ninja 2 eBay auction. The game omes complete in its original packaging, thus including the original instruction manual and anti-piracy insert. Seller ships to Europe, United States, Australia, Canada.

The Amstrad PCW PCW9256

The PCW computer series by Amstrad may not be as well known as the CPC one among retro gamers, but was incredibly popular with professionals in need of a cheap, word-processing dedicated machine. The PCW9256, in particular, a model released in 1991 and sporting a 3.5" drive instead of the more traditional (for Amstrad) 3", was more than competent when it came to writing and printing documents, and even sported a new, elegant, all-in-one design.

You can even grab a fully working one via this Amstrad PCW 9256 auction. The rather obscure micro comes complete with an appropriately vintage dot-matrix printer and the seller ships worldwide. Oh, and for those wondering, the machine could indeed run both CP/M and Locoscript.

Panasonic Q Console System

When Nintendo and Matsushita decided to work together on the GameCube's unique drive and disks, they also agreed to allow Panasonic (a part of the Matsushita empire) to produce a GameCube, that would also play proper DVDs. Thus the Panasonic Q was born, but only released in Japan. Happily, you can now own one with the help of this Panasonic Q eBay auction. Horace & The Spiders (ZX Spectrum)

Horace was the first character that attempted to play the role of the ZX Spectrum mascot and, via his varied and actually good (for the most part) games, has earned a place in gaming history. What's more, not all Horace games are cheap and easy to find. Not the ones released on cartridge for the Speccy's Interface II at least.
