Ed Fries has done the rather unthinkable and ported FPS mega-hit HALO to the Atari 2600. Of course, it's not a FPS anymore and things look decidedly blockier, but you still get to control the horrendously named Master Chief in a large exploration game filled with a ton of enemies to shoot and keys to collect. What's more, the game, Halo 2600, has been released in proper, physical cartridge form (complete with box and everything) by AtariAge and you can grab your copy here. It will set you back $50 and you can only order up to two copies.
I played Halo 2600 a bit at the local arcade festival a couple of years ago and it was a fairly impressive use of coding resources but the game itself didn't hold my interest very long. Coincidentally I said the same thing about the original Halo that's sitting on my shelf... :) Nifty package though - very nicely done.
ReplyDeleteCan fully relate to proper Halo indifference my friend. Can't seem to find any FPS interesting, unless they offer amazing plot. Haven't tried the 2600 version myself, but, from what I've seen, I must admit it looks intriguing.
DeleteI don't play a lot of them myself since amazing plots are very hard to come by especially in FPS titles, but I am actually playing Bioshock Infinite right now and it's pretty good (although not deserving of the upper 9.x ratings I've seen on Metacritic).
DeleteAnyway, you might know this already but you can try out the flash version of Halo 2600 online. Couple of sites I think but one is http://members.shaw.ca/jeffv/halo2600.html.
Ooooh, nice flash version! Thanks a ton.
DeleteInterestingly I'm currently playing through the original Bioshock and, though I love the setting and plot, am getting tired of its mechanics.
On PC I assume? I quite enjoyed Bioshock on the 360 - would probably be in my top 10 list for that console - but I know exactly what you mean about the mechanics. That's pretty much a big reason why even though I very much liked the original I never felt a big urge to play Bioshock 2. Infinite mechanics are very similar of course but the setting/story was different enough to recapture my interest.
DeleteAye, on PC good sir! Mind you, I'm easily bored of shooters especially when the ammo isn't plentiful. I do like shooting games to allow me to shoot everything...
DeleteI would love to have seen how they swung this past Microsoft's lawyers.
ReplyDelete"You want to release it on WHAT?! But... but... this could screw up our whole marketing strategy!"
Hehehe, quite dear sir, quite! Actually, I'd now like to find out to what extent this small project has been MS-approved.
