MadPlanet's Gameroom, the excellent retro gaming focused blog, has posted a fresh and lovely look at Atari 2600 atrocity Custer's Revenge. Read it to find out more about this mindlessly offending and horribly designed adult (ahem) game by Mystique. Oh, and if you are so inclined, do bid on this boxed, sealed copy of Custer's Revenge via eBay (also discovered by dear MadPlanet). Seller ships only to US addresses.
I actually saw one at Videogames History here in Italy. I've yet to decide if we should call it a "status symbol" or not... It's funny how people still talks about this after 28 years, and... wait, it was released less than a month before I was born... *creeps*
ReplyDeleteOh, come on, we're still young. Well, young-ish, really. Anyway, it really is funny that people still care about this particularly game...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the nod Gnome. I'm actually somewhat tempted to get that ridiculous game since it is one of those infamous titles that everyone knows about but nobody actually owns.
ReplyDeleteIn that same 1983 magazine where I read the article on Custer there was also an article about another recurring topic - Are Video Games Art? Most recently stirred up by the whole Roger Ebert thing. To paraphrase the new Battlestar Galactica - all of this has happened before, and it will happen again.
Indeed. First a tragedy and then a farce. That's history for you :)
ReplyDeleteIt's probably worth remembering practically all visual media throughout history has included a porn version at some point - usally right in it's infancy - whether it sexually explicit wood-cuttings, Guttenberg=printed bawdy stories, Victorian nude photographs, What-The_Butler saw machines, dirty movies, pornographic videos, etc etc.
ReplyDeleteVideogames are not an exception to this rule. It's been tried several times, it's still being done today (XXX BMX, Rumble Roses). The key difference with explicit video-games is that they usually make for very boring games.
Absolutely agree with you dear Bob. And whereas quality porn in literature is the extreme opposite of sexist, anything vaguely erotic in video games is usually so sexist it's downright offending.
