You'll have to drive all the way to Kaukauna, WI, United States to pick this one up, but I'm pretty sure this will be a trip worth making. The Deluxe Afterburner arcade cabinet will be waiting for you there, in all its fully working, full-motion SEGA glory. The impressive cabinet seems to be in impeccable shape and, let me assure you, that the game itself hasn't aged a day. Besides there's no way your PC would ever be able to emulate the physical thrill of getting thrown around by a huge arcade machine. Oh, and here's the link you were waiting for: Afterburner Deluxe @ eBay.
Haha.. Oh, the memories. This thing was so intense I remember being literally afraid the first time playing it. I must have been 6 or so.. It would be awesome to own one, the art on it is amazing. I'd get rid of my couch to have that in my living room.
ReplyDeleteMe too I may have been your age as well. I tell people that I'll give sega props on their consoles this was where they shined
DeleteI might get rid of the house altogether, though I'm afraid not everybody would be happy with such an arrangement. Still, what a fantastic cabinet for a fantastic game.
ReplyDeleteSo cool... too bad it's almost as big as my living room :D
ReplyDeleteIt's far less stable too we'd have to admit.
ReplyDeleteVery nice. If you're gonna spring for a real After Burner then yep the moving cockpit version is definitely the one to get. Really amps up the cool factor of the game. Too bad it's outside of both my budget and the reliable driving range of my vehicle.
ReplyDeletePerhaps if we all got together and bought this? Nah... we'd have trouble shipping it around...
ReplyDeleteThis was my very favorite machine in the arcades growing up - I'd play it at 'Challenges' in the Willow Grove Mall, Pennsylvania. How a pinball machine compared to an arcade machine in terms of a more tactile experience, so was Afterburner beyond all others - climbing into a cockpit that would hydraulically toss you around for $0.50 was just the greatest thing!
ReplyDeleteWhile I was building my own arcade several years ago, I was at one of the last few New Jersey arcade auctions and one of these machines was there, beautiful, as I remembered. It was too huge - I could not move it, I was unprepared, and neither could anyone else. It ended with zero bids...not even a dollar...breaks my heart still to this day!
Not even a dollar? Why, that's beyond heart-breaking. This should probably have upset universal order. My girlfriend aside, I can't see who wouldn't love to have their living-room taken over by a huge swirling, loud-sounding Afterburner cabinet.
ReplyDeleteAlso, love the analogy between pinballs, arcades (UFOs we used to call them) and Afterburner.
I actually played one of these about a week ago for the first time in 20 years or so. I can confirm that the game is still fun - and that I'm still quite terrible at it.
ReplyDeleteTerrible you might be, but you are still more than lucky. Finding such an arcade cabinet in our time and day? Wow, that's impressive. Haven't stepped in one since my school days...
ReplyDeleteMy God this is where Sega really showed mastery of a craft. The game itself was fantastic but their cabinets were their true grace. Super hang on here control the motorcycle while on a motorcycle. After burner? Here sit inside a flight simulator style cockpit. They also had another race not the original out run where you sat in a moving car body with a first person windshield view that featured a dangling hedgehog in famous blue shade with red and white sneakers.
ReplyDeleteWhatever became of this machine?
