The SNES CD prototype's appropriately prototyped controller

If it hadn't been for WiiFanboy I'd probably wait for a few more days till I wished you all the best for 2008 and wrote another post, but truth is this bit just can't be missed, for this bit is as rare a rarity as they get. It is, you see, the prototype controller of the never released SNES CD that Nintendo and Sony almost released and that finally evolved into the PlayStation. Most probably never knew such a thing existed, and to be honest I was pretty certain the SNES CD and early Play Station use a SNES controller...

...An unreleased development controller for use with the unreleased SNES CD dev kit. This is 1st party unreleased hardware...

Anyway. Try grabbing the SNES CD prototype controller @ eBay. Seller ships worldwide. Oh, and it's not cheap.

Amstrad CPC 6128 with printer, software & games

An Amstrad CPC 6128 that can be shipped anywhere in the world is pretty rare, but one that's also bundled with a DMP-2000 printer and a decent selection of software is one of the rarest eBay home computing offers conceivable. Well, sort of. Anyway, follow this very Amstrad link to the auction and know that your average CPC goes for more than 10£/20$/13 euros. Oh, and here's the complete Amstrad retrospective.

The GAMATE Compact Video Game System

I have actually touched a Bit Corporation GAMATE (though admittedly ages ago), I have already blogged quite extensively on this rather failed Nintendo Game Boy rival, but I had never before seen the thing on eBay. Really. Never. Apparently then it's a rarity and you can try getting your hands on said quirky console via a certain boxed GAMATE eBay auction. Seller ships worldwide.

The console comes in its original box complete with a game (Galaxy Invaders) and instructions. Oh, and just so you know, this is a monochrome handheld that has absolutely nothing to do with the GBA, but allegedly does feature a handful of interesting games.

bargain.bin retro review: Sensible Soccer (Amiga)

Bargain.bin is another new column here @ Retro Treasures, cunningly developed to complement the recent addition of eBay Rampage and guarantee you hours of retro gaming pleasure. Oh, yes, and it will mostly be about reviewing and helping you track & grab classic yet affordable retro games.

Admittedly 1992 doesn't feel like ages ago, but try telling this to a 16 year old gamer used to calling football soccer and believing that FIFA is the best thing since sliced bread got sliced... Bah! Anyway, 1992 was, among other things, the year when Sensible Software, already acclaimed developers of Parallax, Wizball and Mega Lo Mania, released the best footie game ever: Sensible Soccer. Or to be precise: Sensi.

Sensi was rather obviously an Amiga 500 football game, that eventually went on and ported itself to every conceivable format (even the Atari Jaguar and the Xbox Live Arcade got a taste) and then spawned ten or so sequels, with the latest one being the surprisingly decent Sensible Soccer 2006. Truth is though, that as Sensi begot Sensi the line reached it's apex in Sensible World of Soccer; SWOS. It had everything the original had, better graphics, a management side and tons more. Was it a better game? Yes. Is the original Sensi still the best footie ever created? Yes. How come? Well, figure it out yourselves mates (hint: innovation).

Now, to the game per se and specifically to its Amiga version which was (still is really) by far the best one available. Sensi, not unlike Kick Off and Kick Off 2 before it, is a zoomed out top-down 2D football game complete with tiny stylized player sprites, who might not be able to control the ball or dribble that well, but definitely do run like hell and are incredibly responsive to the joystick's command. The game features quite a few 1992 national and club teams with proper names, a selection of different terrains that actually make a difference, rudimentary tactics, a surreal league, ueber stylish graphics, great sound, customizable players and in general anything you can imagine a 16-bit footie game could ever manage and more. Mind you though, them features were by no means the game's true strength, they were just the icing on the cake.

FIFA 08, you see, has got all of the above, amazing 3D graphics and tons more, but still plays like shit. Sensible Soccer on the other hand really managed to capture the spirit of the beautiful game and more impressively the pace. The thing feels proper, mostly since the developers tried to emulate the way the game is played and not the way it's presented on TV, and, what's more, all you'll need to enjoy is a one button joystick and mastery of the brilliant after touch mechanic. Oh, and the supported two-player game makes Wii Sports seem boring.

So, care for a verdict then? Good. Sensible Soccer is an absolute classic and as it also turned out to be a huge commercial success, you won't have trouble finding yourselves a cheap boxed copy. Believe me, it's football as the gods intended it to be.

Where to get it (tehe):
Sensible Soccer Amiga: eBay.co.uk, eBay.com
Sensible Soccer in general: eBay.co.uk, eBay.com
Sensible Soccer 2006: Codemasters, Play-Asia

CLD-A100???

This is probably the oddest thing I've found on ebay regarding videogames. According to the description this is a 6-in-1 console, being able to play games for the Genesis, TurboGraphx 16, Sega Cd and more. Odd? A lot, so you better check out the respective auction. Who knows, maybe someone out there has $500 to spend on this monster.

eBay Rampage: Sega MegaDrive

The eBay Rampage, the latest (still underdeveloped) idea to hit Retro Treasures and something you're looking at right now, will hopefully turn into a regular feature of the blog, providing you with collections of usually thematic links from eBay. The Death and Return of Superman, and it's as rare as it sounds (uhh, very). Europe only, ends 23 Oct. 2007.

Sega MD II & Sega CD II with 10 games. UK only, ends 24 Oct. 2007.

Atari Jaguar CD & Games

The Atari Jaguar CD, just like the Sega CD before it, was more than a CD add-on. It featured a variety of custom chips, extra memory, Jeff Minter firmware and managed to bolster the already doomed Jaguar's hardware specs. What's more, now that that the Jag's encryption codes have entered the public domain and cds are cheaper than hankies, the Jaguar CD is where the vibrant Jaguar homebrew scene is working its wonders and an essential accessory for Atari gamers.

Problem is the Jag CD, being almost a rarity, usually commands respectable eBay prices, sometimes even over 60£/85 euros. This boxed Jaguar CD & games auction, on the other hand, might just be a more reasonable bargain. The console on sale comes in its original box with complete instructions etc and you'll also get 2 demo cds and the Blue Lightning game. Seller only ships to Europe.

Sonic Pocket Adventure (Neo Geo Pocket)

The Neo Geo Pocket wasn't the most successful handheld ever, but it was one of the first to get a proper Sonic the Hedgehog game (and a lovely Metal Slug one too). Sonic Pocket Adventure was released back in 1999 and is an almost direct port of the brilliant Genesis/MegaDrive Sonic 2 game. Now, all you have left to do is read an IGN review and buy a dead cheap brand new Sonic Pocket Adventure at Play-Asia. Grabbing a Neo Geo Pocket might come in handy too...
